Colonial Williamsburg

Colonial Williamsburg was founded in the early 20th century as a preservation project aimed at restoring the city's historic district to its colonial-era appearance. Williamsburg had been Virginia's capital during the 18th century, but by the early 20th century, the city had fallen into disrepair. The restoration project, led by Reverend Dr. W.A.R. Goodwin and businessman John D. Rockefeller Jr., began in the 1920s and involved the acquisition and reconstruction of numerous historic buildings. The restored district opened to the public in 1932 as a living history museum, offering visitors a chance to experience life in colonial America. Today, Colonial Williamsburg remains a premier historic site and a popular tourist destination.
